Out of Africa...and into Belize!

Trip Length: 7-21 days  |  Land cost: from $1270

"We had a great time in Belize. Our island hotel was right on the beach... a good choice. The jungle lodge was terrific - beautiful cottages, excellent food and as friendly a staff as you'll find anywhere. Canoeing on the river was a real plus. We really enjoyed the trip!"
-Don Wilson, Virginia

Belize - only a two hour flight from the USA, this tiny country hosts a tremendous wealth of natural and cultural diversity. History has traipsed across Belize through the centuries, from the ancient Mayan cities that are still being uncovered and excavated in its lush tropical forests, to the vibrant Caribbean culture of today, celebrated at its peak during Carnival Season.

But Belize is best known for its rich biological diversity, highlighted by its incredible coral reef and by its tropical birds and animals, including the rare Scarlet Macaw, Tapir and Jaguar, among many others. Forty percent of the country is currently designated as protected areas and national parks and Belize boasts the only Jaguar preserve in the world. Belize also has the second largest barrier reef in the world, teeming with marine life, from endangered manatees to whale sharks.

On this special Rainforest and Reef Safari, you will begin your discovery of Belize exploring the scenic jungle waterways of the New River, enroute to the archeological ruins of Lamanai, settled by the Mayans around 500 B.C. You will search for rare birds, including the Jabiru Stork, largest bird in Central America, crocodiles, Howler Monkeys, Tapir and other wildlife, along with beautiful orchids growing on overhanging trees, before you arrive to explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Lamanai itself.

From Lamanai you travel through the remote Rio Bravo Reserve to Gallon Jug, and Chan Chich Lodge. This remote area of Belize is teeming with wildlife - in addition to deer and wild turkeys, jaguar, ocelot, puma and Belize's other elusive cats are found here in abundance. Birdlife is also prolific here, with more than 300 of Belize's 520 species of birds residing in the thick jungle surrounding Chan Chich. Finally, you venture to Ambergris Island, where the Belize Barrier Reef, second largest in the world, is like a marine Serengeti, filled with sea life. You can swim, snorkel, or dive in the beautiful turquoise waters of the Western Caribbean.

An optional extension takes you from the islands of the coast up into the highlands of the Maya Mountains and into Guatemala to the incredible ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, seat of Mayan power and culture for centuries. Its dramatic temples, many still being excavated, rise high above the surrounding canopy of jungle, and in the early morning hours, the bird and animal life is astounding.

Come join us on a truly magnificent Belize Rainforest and Reef journey.
